Professor of comparative religion as a background, Luiz Gonzaga de Carvalho is a Brazilian intellectual in his own right.
I went to see him in order to understand more about Brazilian history, Brazilian politics and the role of his father's work, Olavo de Carvalho, in the dramatic political shift that occurred in Brazil over the last several years, a shift that hit the international mainstream headlines with the election of Jair Bolsonaro.
We got some of that but then the conversation drifted to a plethora of topics and would have gone on quite a bit if we hadn't run out of cigarettes and it hadn't been that cold outside in Bucharest on the night of November 30th.
The chat lasted well in excess of 12 hours, of which a bit over 7 was in front of the camera.
The first two hours is Brazilian politics and history, in great detail - including the now over one century old link between Brazil and Romania. Then for another 3 hours we discussed identity, sexual politics, the frustrations of young men and religion. And, finally, the last two hours are about the meaning of life - and how to find it practically as a young person. Yes, really.
Should you like this kind of content, I'll beg Mr. Carvalho to find time for another class like this sometime during 2019 :D
