The Viking Skald (Poet) - Warrior, Entertainer and Destroyer of Reputations

A Viking Skald (meaning poet) is a composer, reciter of Kvads (meaning poems) that honour people or heroes and their deeds, but could also be an educator for the children and a bringer of news and stories from other places and lands.
Skalder could also battle each other with Kvads and it was a terrible loss of honour to lose such a battle.
Skalds played an important role in Viking society and were both honored and feared. The fear of a skald comes from his ability to compose sarcastic poetry about people that could harm a king’s, a Jarl or persons standing or reputation; a Kvad could even start a Holmgang.
