Chopin composed a group of three nocturnes between 1831 and 1832, with the works being first published in 1832 by the German publisher Maurice Schlesinger. The three pieces are dedicated to Belgian concert pianist Marie Pleyel (née Moke).

Marie Pleyel was 21 at the time of Chopin completing these three pieces, but had already built a considerable reputation as a piano virtuoso. The composer Berlioz had proposed to Marie in 1830, however Marie would break off the engagement to marry Camille Pleyel, the wealthy piano manufacturer, in April of 1831.
