Consider the sin of Presumption; that is, the condition of a soul which, because of a badly regulated reliance on God's mercy and power, hopes for salvation without doing anything to deserve it, or expects the pardon of his sins without repenting of them. Presumption is 'hope without fear' yet the Advent season calls us to foster both hope in God and fear of the Lord. Presumption claims God is "too good and kind" to let souls suffer eternally in hell. Presumption increases sin, allowing one to act as if sin were good or at least acceptable. Presumption with regard to venial matter makes it far easier to presume regarding grave matter. St. Alphonsos Liguori teaches that there is a number of sins beyond which God will pardon no more. This quantity can't be known and varies for each; hence one never knows if that next mortal sin is the one at which God will no longer grant the grace of contrition.
