Religion arises from habits - and habits arise from the demands of local geography and energy (that is, food availability). Our habits in adapting to a particular geography and climate, and its food sources, become remembered in custom. Custom is wrapped, over time, with new stories and a priestly class, in ritual; and ritual is canonized as religion. The gods are added later for emotional and psychological effect.
