At Fort Apache, an honorable, veteran war captain (John Wayne) finds conflict when his regime is placed under the command of a young, glory hungry lieutenant colonel (Henry Fonda). The Apache have left the reservation and the lieutenant colonel soon finds the reason why. A corrupt Indian agent in charge of providing food and other necessary items for their survival has forced their decision to leave. Still, with no respect for the Apache Indian Nation, the lieutenant colonel creates a plan to trick and then force the Apache back to the reservation, placing his entire command in danger.
