Cleomenes knew Sparta needed change to deal with the great contemporary challenges faced by Greece in the third century when the city-state model of politics was already eclipsed by the great Hellenistic states of the eastern Mediterranean. This is history with great relevance to anyone dissatisfied with the decay of Europe today.
