Louisiana could be hit by a major hurricane early next week, as Tropical Storm Ida is projected to rapidly strengthen into Hurricane Ida. Get the latest on the Gulf Coast hurricane threat in our LIVE COVERAGE.

According to the newest forecast from the National Hurricane Center, Tropical Storm Ida will strengthen to a hurricane on Saturday and make landfall on Sunday or Monday on the northern Gulf Coast. The current forecast track puts landfall in southeast Louisiana near New Orleans, but part of Mississippi is also in the cone of uncertainty. The National Hurricane Center says Ida could ultimately reach major hurricane strength. Other parts of the Gulf Coast (including some areas in Texas) also face the possibility of severe weather from the storm.
