Our Lord is like the sun above that shines upon the moon of the Church which reflects that perfect light and illuminates those in darkness. Christ, Who is the Light of the World, gives us the truth…provides for us true enlightenment, including the truth about marriage. Our Lord came to the wedding feast of Cana in order to bless the institution of marriage…to restore marriage to what it was in the beginning… or even make it better by perfecting it with a Sacrament. We truly need this enlightenment today in our fallen world considering the sad state of marriage today. What is marriage? The Church is clear…marriage is a natural, indissoluble union, perfected by the Sacrament, between one man and one woman directed towards the purpose of preserving the human race by generating and raising children. Marriage is also ordered to the mutual help of spouses and a remedy for lust. The purpose of marriage is two-fold with the primary purpose being procreation…bringing children into the world and rearing them. As for the secondary purpose - it is for the mutual help of the husband and wife and as a remedy for concupiscence. The term matrimony is a word that comes from the Latin word, “mater,” or mother. This is because the first end of marriage is to make the maid or virgin into a mother who generates children.
