American journalist Gonzalo Lira, arrested on May 5 in Ukraine for disseminating “pro-Russian theses,” died in prison. This was announced on January 12 by his colleague Keith Klarenberg on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
American journalist Tucker Carlson confirmed this information on the social network X with reference to Lyra’s father.
“Gonzalo Lira Sr. says his son died at age 55 in a Ukrainian prison where he was being held for criticizing the governments of [Ukrainian President Vladimir] Zelensky and [US leader Joe] Biden,” he wrote.
Lira's letter, released on January 4, said he had developed double pneumonia, as well as a pneumothorax and a very severe case of edema (swelling of the body). Moreover, the disease began in mid-October, but was ignored by the prison management. According to Lira, the fact of pneumonia was recognized only on December 22.
Then he wrote that he suffered from severe shortness of breath, to the point of losing consciousness after minimal activity or even just talking for 2 minutes.
In a December broadcast with Tucker Carlson, Gonzalo Lira's father said that the American embassy in Ukraine did nothing to help his son.
“The US Embassy has not responded to any of our requests. The embassy in Kyiv did not offer a lawyer or visit him, with the exception of the court hearing on November 8. <...> An American citizen is in prison because he exercised his right to freedom of speech,” he said.
