Chick Corea In Japan Interview (1987)

I took my wife and my two children to Kyoto and we lived there for about six weeks in 1982 or so. And we had a very very good time and I wrote a lot music in the house that we rented. It was Ginkakuji-mae right by the temple, and I wrote a piece of music called Ginkakuji (銀閣寺) and I wrote a piece of music called Japanese Waltz and many other pieces while I was there.

I have an interest in helping artists and musicians become more creative and freer and freer. I have an interest in interesting people generally in music and in arts, because I feel that the more people in the world that can participate in music and other kinds of art forms, maybe the better that we can make the world.

Really, the best thing to do is to keep the traditions that you have in Japan of great organization and great cleanliness and great spiritual health, and also add to it the freedom to create as individuals. These two things I think can go together, they don't have to fight one another. You can have a great organization and great cleanliness together with great personal freedom and personal creation.
