UNIT 1985 (Single Version)
This forms the ‘b’ side of our 7th single. Finally, after 37 years, we’ve managed to record a decent version that is very close to how I wanted it to sound when I wrote it in 1982 and it was spectacularly wrecked by The Apostles on their 1st EP. Note: the original lyric used on that dreary old record was by Matthew Pond, a spoiled middle class brat who represented all that was base, vile and cowardly in the punk scene in Britain at the time. I wrote a new (and vastly superior) lyric for it in 1995 then modified a couple of lines in 2019...so you could say it took 37 years to finish this number.
Some of us are looters, others carry shooters:
claiming back our heritage; the barricades are still standing.
The revolution is for the people with nothing to lose.
Look at the future: what a sight to see!
When the dispossessed fight back in solidarity – I want to be there.
I still remember all the battles that we thought we’d never win
and when I think of all the fallen comrades never giving in,
I am inspired to carry on until the final siege is won.
Look at the future: what a sight to see!
When the dispossessed fight back in solidarity – I want to be there.
Our land was stolen from us by a rich and privileged elite
who, with their laws and armies, try to keep us humble and discrete,
so let us manifest our hate and take up arms against the State.
Look at the future: what a sight to see!
When the dispossessed fight back in solidarity – I want to be there.
We must be urban guerrillas and train ourselves to be killers,
occupy the factories, take back our lives and live them.
The revolution is for the people with nothing to lose.
We’ll have to kill so we survive, such is our will to stay alive.
The road is long, the struggle sour: we must be strong in our finest hour.
Look at the future: what a sight to see!
When the dispossessed fight back in solidarity – I want to be there.
With the Civil War and Ollie Cromwell from whom it all began,
we built mythologies around a revolutionary plan,
so storm the palaces and the towers: the revolution will be ours!
It all began in 1985. We were alive in 1985.
