In the United States, propaganda is spread by both government and the mainstream media. This is no secret; it has been openly admitted by the government for a long time. Throughout its history to the present day, the United States government has issued various forms of propaganda to both domestic and international audiences.
The US government has instituted various domestic propaganda bans, including the Smith-Mundt Act of 1948, which prohibited the US government from using propaganda on its own citizens. However, that all changed in 2013 when Barack Obama signed the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). That act allows the US government to use propaganda on its own citizens.
