Please note the shadow's missing head by the end of the movie, which is the result sought through the infliction of trauma.

Max Fleischer was Disney's competition and while Disney went for kids, Fleischer's creations were supposedly meant for adults. Bimbo "the dog" is a reference to male prostitutes/sexual slaves.
In August 1930, a poodle-human hybrid, Bimbo's girlfriend, made her screen debut in Dizzy Dishes, and quickly became Fleischer's biggest star; she would later be named Betty Boop. By 1931, Betty's floppy canine ears had evolved into hoop earrings, and she was transformed into a fully human girl (though she retained her romantic relationship with the dog for several episodes after her transmogrification).
A big part of Fleischer's work revolves around mind control, namely his 1922 piece entitled "The Hypnotist".
