In 1811, Beethoven was commissioned to compose a commemorative orchestral work on behalf of King Stephen I, who founded the Kingdom of Hungary in the year 1000. The commission came from Francis I, Emperor of Austria and the last of the Holy Roman Emperors to be performed at the inauguration of a new theatre built in the city of Pest.

The work is comprised of an overture and 9 vocal movements.
