The Secret Teachings, 2022-04-27: Ruffled Feathers Bruised Beak
Twitter has been an echo chamber of bias, a bastion of bigotry, and a haven of hive-like thinking. Now that Elon Musk has purchased the company, he says that will change by opening the platform up for free speech, adding new features, authenticating people, and defeating spambots. Regardless if you believe him or not, there are two defining questions being asked: will a certain president will be allowed back on, and will people be able actually to speak freely within the confines of the law. Some are so troubled by the purchase they are threatening to leave the platform as if self-appointed arbiters of reality and censor-driven fact-checkers hold any honest sway. The irony in all this won’t be lost either that those opposing Musk’s private overtake of Twitter have also been the biggest proponents of slogans like ‘it’s a private company, they can do what they want’ and ‘if you don’t like it, build your own company’. Perhaps the best irony is that a company promoting anti-capitalist views ultimately sold out and took the money. They would probably sell their own noose too. The right suddenly loves Elon although they have disliked many of his political views. The left now loathes him. This vile reaction to even the possibility of openness, honesty, fairness, decency, and free speech is truly telling of the cesspit that is social media. People are upset because they may lose their petty perceived power, and their ability to harass, attack, threaten, and determine what reality is. Twitter's top lawyer and moderator even physically cried. They claim that democracy or free speech gives them the right to do whatever they want, though they obviously cannot define either word. It’s this sycophantic colloquialism that lulls our better judgment into remission. It speaks to our goodwill and coaxes us into compliance with the underlying sub-conscious notion of some non-aggressive, honest, pure, and utopian intention. But we have to remember that throughout history anyone who has censored is never the good guy no matter the reason they use to justify the erosion of human rights.
