The Corsair Overture, H. 101 by Hector Berlioz

Berlioz completed this short work for orchestra in 1844 while on holiday in Nice. The first performance of the work took place in January of 1845 under the title “La tour de Nice” (The Tower of Nice). Berlioz would later rename the work to ‘Le corsaire rouge” (the Red Corsair), in reference to the novel ‘Red Rover’ by the American author James Fenimore Cooper. The ‘Red Rover’ in the novel is an infamous swashbuckling pirate.

Berlioz would again change the name of this work to simply ‘Le corsaire’ (The Corsair), in reference to the poem ‘The Corsair’ by Lord Byron. While Berlioz clearly felt the work did not reflect his experiences in Nice, it would seem he was set on the idea of an adventurous life on the high seas.

This work is comprised of a single movement.
