the byrds - my back pages - alt. version - stereo remix
Edit for headphones. I like this version better, for the guitar solo on the regular version is quite 'maladroit'.
On March 26th 1967 the Byrds released their cover of Bob Dylan's "My Back Pages". It entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #86; five weeks later on April 30th, 1967 it would peak at #30 for one week and spent seven weeks on the Top 100... Bob Dylan wrote "My Back Pages" in 1964 as (one of) the last songs for his album "Another Side of Bob Dylan". The song is partly based on the traditional folk song "Young But Growing". The song is on The Byrds' 1967 album "Younger Than Yesterday" [Remastered].
Here is the song by the crême de la crême of pop music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V_Df39PjkwA
MY BACK PAGES
(Robert Allen Zimmerman (Duluth, Minnesota, May 24, 1941))
crimson flames tied through my ears
throwin' high and mighty traps
countless fire and flaming road
using ideas as my maps
"we'll meet on edges, soon," said I
proud 'neath heated brow.
ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"rip down all hate," I screamed
lies that life is black and white
spoke from my skull, I dreamed
romantic flanks of musketeers
foundation deep, somehow
oh, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
in a soldier's stance, I aimed my hand
at the mongrel dogs who teach
fearing not I'd become my enemy
in the instant that I preach
my pathway led by confusion boats
mutiny from stern to bow.
ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now
my guard stood hard when abstract threats
too noble to neglect
deceived me into thinking
I had something to protect
good and bad, I define these terms
quite clear, no doubt, somehow.
oh, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now
