Seven Churches Part 11 - Revelation 3:9-21 - Revelation Study
One of the things important to understand is that Jesus is the king of the Jews, but this term and this phrase doesn't mean: he's the king of a race of people. It means that he is the king, the leader, the perfect example of those who choose to serve God with a servant’s heart, who love God and who want to do his will in all things.
The term “Jews” originated during the Babylonian captivity. 4,000 years prior to that time, the descendants of Abraham were called gypsies, or Hebrews. When the Hebrews were taken to Babylon they let their captors know, in no uncertain terms, that they were God's chosen people. This claim amused the Babylonians because, to them, these gypsies were nothing but exiles and slaves. So instead of calling them gypsies, the Babylonians took the first two letters from the word Judea and created the slang expression “Jew” to represent the self-asserting, chosen race.
History clearly teaches, this is how the term came to be. You might be surprised to know that this derision and scorn was a fulfillment of prophecy; and in our last segment I read from Jeremiah 29 where God said that because his people had rejected him and had refused to listen to his servants, the prophets, that he was going to pursue them with sword, famine, and plague.
The scorn and reproach directed toward the Jews was motivated by God's Spirit. Why? Look at Ezekiel 36:20 “But when they were scattered among the nations, they brought shame on my holy name. For the nations said, ‘These are the people of the Lord, but he couldn’t keep them safe in his own land!’ Then I was concerned for my holy name, on which my people brought shame among the nations.”
God took a nation of slaves and did everything possible to elevate them to the stature of a great nation, only to have his own people turn against him. And before you get too critical of what the Jews did, I must remind you that every nation has done the same thing. Israel's experience is but a mirror of humanity. What God did for Israel, he's done for the United States of America. And look what we've done, we've profaned God's name by the way we live, by the things we do around the world, and by the abominable things that take place inside our country.
