While this concerto is assigned as number one of the three violin concertos Saint-Saëns would compose, it was actually the second to be drafted, with the work being finished in 1859. The confusion is due to the fact that the first violin concerto Saint-Saëns wrote would later be published after the second would receive its publication. This work was composed specifically to be performed by the Spanish violin prodigy Pablo de Sarasate.

This concerto is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro
II. Andante espressivo
III. Tempo primo
