Rachmaninoff completed this work for piano, violin and cello in 1892 at the age of 18, with the premiere performance being given in January the same year in Moscow with Rachmaninoff on the piano. Some evidence suggests Rachmaninoff used a reversed version of the Piano Concerto No. 1 by Tchaikovsky in the opening sections of this Trio as well as through the remainder of the work. The composition is comprised of a single movement.
