Symphonic Poem No 4, ‘Orpheus’, S. 98 by Franz Liszt

Liszt completed this short work for orchestra in 1854 with the premiere performance taking place in February the same year in Weimar. The work was written to act as an overture to a performance of the opera ‘Orfeo ed Euridice (Orpheus and Eurydice) by the Bohemian composer Christoph Gluck. The performance was also be to celebrate the birthday of Maria Pavlovna, the Grand Duchess of Russia. Maria Pavlovna had appointed Liszt as Kapellmeister extraordinaire in 1842, and was a patron of the arts to other composers as well as several poets.

This is one of four symphonic poems by Liszt based on a specific individual in history, mythology or folklore.
This work is comprised of a single movement.
