Handel completed his opera “Rinaldo” in 1711, with the premiere performance being given in February of the same year at the Queen’s Theatre in London. The opera is based on aspects of the poem “Jerusalem Delivered” by Italian poet “Torquato Tasso”, which in turn is a story based on the First Crusade and Christian efforts to reclaim Jerusalem from Islamic subjugation.

The aria ‘Lascia ch’io pianga’ is performed in the first half of act three.
