Elgar completed a set of three works for violin and piano in 1884, collectively given the opus No. 4. This collection would be the first music Elgar published. Each of the three pieces within the collection would be dedicated to a different person.

This work was dedicated to ‘Miss E. E, Inverness”. The identity of Miss E. E. is not confirmed, and there are three references to this person in Elgar’s diary, hinting at a possible romantic relationship which could sadly not become something more, a feeling conveyed in this music.
