What happened to the 56 signers of our Declaration of Independence?
5 of the signers were captured by the British and charged with treason and tortured before they died.
12 had their homes ransacked and burned to the ground.
2 of them lost sons that served in the Army… another 2 lost sons that were captured.
9 of the 56 fought and died from wounds and hardships during the Revolutionary War.
24 were lawyers and jurists… 11 of them were merchants…
9 were farmers and plantation owners; all well educated and with Considerable means…
Carter Braxton, of Virginia, was a wealthy planter and trader. He saw his ships destroyed by the British Navy… He sold his home and properties to pay his debts… He died penniless and in rags.
Thomas McKean was hounded so vigorously by the British, that he was forced to keep his family in hiding. While continuing to serve in the Congress, without pay, His possessions were taken from him… Utter Poverty was his reward.
Vandals and soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.
At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., knew that British General Cornwallis had conscripted his Family Plantation, for use as his command headquarters. Without hesitation, he turned to General George Washington and said… ‘Burn it to the ground’… Nelson died bankrupt.
Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife… she died within a few months.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying… while their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste, as he was forced to live in the forest and in caves. Upon finally returning home, he found his wife dead, and his 13 children vanished.
