Hayden completed this symphony in 1794 as part of the 12 London symphonies he completed while living in England. This is the eight of the 12 symphonies and bears the name ‘Military Symphony’ due to a reviewer at the premiere suggesting the symphony evoked the ‘hellish roar of war increasing to a climax of horrid sublimity”.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Adagio; Allegro
II. Allegretto
III. Menuetto: Moderato
IV. Presto
