Romance in B flat major, Op. 28 by Gabriel Fauré
Faure completed this short work for violin and piano in 1877. While Faure would later express his fondness for the work, he would indicate that the initial motivation for writing this Romance was ‘boredom’. In August of 1877, Faure would have a three-week holiday in the spa resort town of Cauterest in Hautes-Pyrénées region (the South of France, on the border with Spain near Andorra).
Faure was prompted to take this holiday by Pauline Viardot, the mother of Marianne Viardot. Faure had recently proposed to Marianne, and Pauline asked Faure to give her daughter time to consider the proposal. As such, to pass the time, Faure would complete this Romance with the assistance of the brother of Pauline Viardot, the violinist Paul Viardot.
This work is comprised of a single movement.
