In this story set in 1979, we meet Laurie Caswell, a bookstore clerk at the Northbrook Mall. She goes to the movies with her boyfriend. Later, they go to her house and share some booze. Laurie has a nightmare of the dying mall in 2021, which resembles a prison. Will the nightmare come true, or will the old book she discovers the next day at a yard sale help change the course of humanity?
