Passages by Bill Schaeffer
(I changed the name to Hetrodyne Passages for uploading, but have restored the original name - Wm S. 8--20-2018)
Produced at the University of Illinois in 1985
This piece is unique because both the video and audio are created from heterodyne interference artifacts (each in their respective domains).
The video feedback was created at the UBS studios at the University of Illinois. The heterodyne interference of the two grids of resolution between the camera tube and the TV monitor give the shape its unique texture.
The music was created at the PLATO Music Reasearch project at C.E.R.L. at the University of Illinois. The song "Grind" is available on "PLATO Computer Music 1983-1985" at www.cdbaby.com
The music was generated at such a low frequency specification that we are actually hearing the pitch created by the individual points of the digital waveform. The rhythms ARE the frequencies of the notes (very low sub audible frequencies).
The music was created by holding down certain keys on the keyboard in unison. An octave higher was twice as fast. An octave and a fifth was three times as fast. The pitch mis-tunings are due to calculation errors due to lack of precision at very low, low frequencies. (I was "gaming the system" to see what it would do and the result was pure sonic beauty)
