Camp Hoffman (Point Lookout Prison) served as a Union Prison during the American Civil War and housed thousands of confederate soldiers from a period of late 1862 until the end of the war in 1865.

An estimated 3500 - 8000 soldiers died in Camp Hoffman due to wounds, disease and sickness. The location is often labeled the most haunted location in the state of Maryland. The state park is known for its great fishing from the Potomac River and the Chesapeake Bay.
