Save the Chimps is one of the largest chimpanzee sanctuaries in the world and its mission is to provide refuge and exemplary care to chimpanzees in need (related photos). Longtime animal rights activist Dan Mathews joined guest host Connie Willis (info) in the first half of the show to discuss the sanctuary's life-long care of chimpanzees who have been rescued from research laboratories, the pet trade, and entertainment industry. Mathews and other animal rights activists believe chimpanzees deserve to live free from exploitation and endangerment. Chimps are like us and we share 98% of our DNA with them, Mathews explained, noting how this argument was successfully used to end much of the use of chimpanzees in laboratory experiments.
"Chimps live a long time... they've been kept in a basement cage in a laboratory and prodded with needles and injected with various diseases, and it's a life of misery," he added. The problem is where do you put all of the chimps rescued from laboratories. That's where Save the Chimps comes in. A philanthropist provided funding to build a sanctuary in Fort Pierce, Florida consisting of 12 islands each containing 20 to 30 chimps that have been rescued from laboratories, circuses, or roadside zoos, Mathews reported. "It is an absolute thrill now to work on the side of it where it's actually caring for the animals, allowing them a retirement and life as nature intended," he admitted.

In the second half of the program, Garnet Schulhauser revealed what he has learned from his spirit guide about the eternal questions of life and the truth of our existence as eternal souls, the cycle of reincarnation, and how the splendor of the afterlife awaits us all. According to Schulhauser, he was walking down the street one day in 2007 when a homeless man stepped in front of his path. "I stood their frozen because he had these amazing, dazzling, sparking blue eyes... I felt like he was looking right down into the depths of my soul and that he knew everything about me," Schulhauser recalled. The homeless man was named Albert and turned out to be a wise spirit in disguise, he added. Schulhauser described the feeling of pure unconditional love coming from Albert. "I never felt this good any time before in my life", he said.
Schulhauser had multiple encounters with Albert, including many telepathically, and learned from him about the reality of Spirit Side. The Spirit Side is where we come from and where we return after our period of incarnation on Earth, he disclosed. It is a beautiful place filled with unconditional love and there is no pain or suffering there, Schulhauser explained, noting spirit inhabitants no longer have to eat, drink, or breathe there. Albert showed him his welcoming party — the loved ones who are there to greet newcomers — and taught him that everyone has spirit guides. "Spirit guides are basically like our coaches beyond the veil... and everyone has several spirit guides and these are all arranged before we incarnate," he said, pointing out they send messages to keep us on course but their messages are often too subtle for many to notice.
