“The sister of Oscar Wilde, ten-year-old Isola, died of meningitis on 23 February, 1867, at her parents' home in Dublin. Wilde was twelve years old, and greatly affected by her death. Almost fifteen years later, he published "Requiescat," his reflection on the subject, in Poems (1881), his only collection of poetry.”
Requiescat in Latin means, "may he _or_ she, take consolation, or find rest and comfort." In English, the definition is merely, “A prayer for the peaceful repose of the soul of a dead person.” The poem of Wilde, however, appears to be a consolation more for the mourner than the deceased.
