Asrael Symphony in C minor, Op. 27 by Josef Suk

Czech composer Josef Suk completed this symphony in 1906, with the premiere performance being given in February of 1907 at the Prague National Theatre. The work was originally intended to function as a funeral symphony for the composer Antonin Dvořák, who died in May of 1904, hence the title ‘Asrael’, the angel of death from the Old Testament. During the composing of the symphony, Suk’s wife Otille (daughter of the composer Dvořák) would pass away from heart failure at the young age of 27.

When the symphony was completed in October 1906, Suk would dedicate the work to both Dvořák and Otille.

This symphony is comprised of five movements:
I. Andante sostenuto
II. Andante
III. Vivace
IV. Adagio
V. Adagio e maestroso
