Symphony No. 6 in E minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams

Vaughan Williams completed this symphony in 1947, with a further revision of the work in 1950. The premiere performance of the work was given in April of 1948 by the BBC Symphonic orchestra. Vaughan Williams is noted to have been frustrated when people assumed this symphony was a programmatic representation of the war which had finished only a few years earlier. He would eventually be quoted as saying “It never seems to occur to people that a man might just want to write a piece of music”.

The composer would however say that aspects of the final movement were inspired by Act IV of the Tempest by William Shakespeare.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro
II. Moderato
III. Scherzo: Allegro vivace
IV. Epilogue: Moderato
