This story, besides its being most dramatic and entertaining, is filled with moral allegory. I agree with the interpretation of Philo Judaeus, that the serpent, "who, without feet, lays his whole stress upon his belly," is a symbol for pleasure. The story of the Fall of Man, therefore, represents the surrender of Reason to Pleasure, and the consequence that such surrender alienates us from God and happiness. When man governs his appetite, he walks with God; when he gives way to it, he departs from his presence.
