Shaan Saar's head instructor Gabriel Mora demonstrating how to defend against a full nelson showing Krav Maga Street Defence techniques.
The Full Nelson is a very dangerous position to be in. It manipulates the cervical vertebrae’s in the neck.
A lot of self defense instructors will tell you to attack the eyes, manipulate the fingers, and some...attack the groin. The problem with these is that if the attacker’s goal is to break your neck you have only seconds to respond. If you miss any of them and make the aggressor angry, poor technique can result in death.
In this video you see a more practical way of defending the Full Nelson that does not require a guessing factor of where the eyes are, considerations of being strong enough to manipulate the fingers, or the ability of being able to hit the attacker in the groin with your hands.
Here’s the anatomy of the neck and how much damage can be done in a short period of time when placed in a Full Nelson:
1) There are a total of 7 bones in the neck that surround your spinal cord. They are called C1-C7 with C1 starting at the end of the base of the skull and the rest proceeding away.
2) Most of the time injuries to this portion of the neck generally result in quadriplegia.
3) Areas above C4 are incredibly fatal and require ventilation. C5-C7 will allow for control only until the wrist or less.
