Rocco Greco was an appointed violist at the Reale cappella del Tesoro di San Gennaro (i.e., translated in English to the Royal Chapel of the Treasure of Saint Januarius) (Malagoli, 2021). Greco took the position of composer in 1717 and introduced the relatively new violoncello to the chapels instrumental ensemble (Malagoli, 2021). Both Greco and his colleague Gaetano Francone (c1650-1717) composed new music for the cello which was suitable for performance within the liturgy of the chapel, and is considered some of the oldest surviving cello repertoire (Malagoli, 2021). The exquisite painting in this video is "Saint Januarius showing his relics" by artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571?-1610).
