Foreword
For almost three decades one of the best known and best loved Evangelical preachers in the city of Manila was Dr. Edwin G. Spahr. His Sunday morning message at Grace Bible Church not only inspired and thrilled the many who gathered but sent them out to live and witness for Christ who was always given the pre-eminence. Dr. Spahr was co-founder and co-principal of Grace Christian High School which now has a student population of over 4,000. This progressive Christian school and three “Grace” churches flourish today due in no small measure to the life and influence of Ed & Helen Spahr as they were commonly known to their associates.
In response to our request Dr. Spahr finally committed to writing these inspiring messages. We trust that having now put his hand to the pen (not plough in this case) that he will not turn back for there is much more in the mind and heart of this beloved man of God which if written could bless the Church of Christ in Asia for many decades to come.

Preface
These expository, devotional meditations have been written primarily for pastors and others in the Philippines, the land of my rich inheritance in the Lord for the past thirty wonderful years. I refer to the inspired statement concerning Abraham: “By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance” (Hebrews 11:8).
What I have learned from others and what may be original are by now so inextricably entwined that I cannot separate them. I trust that it will suffice for me to state that I have drunk deeply of the writings of Alexander Maclaren, G. Campbell Morgan, Arthur W. Pink, and J. C. Ryle. Their beneficent influence upon me permeates these pages, perhaps at times even by unintentionally unacknowledged direct quotation. Dr. K. Schilder’s trilogy:
Christ in His Suffering, Christ on Trial, and
Christ Crucified, and
The Suffering Saviour by F.W. Krummacher also have greatly stimulated my thinking. My constant references have been A.T. Robertson’s
Word Pictures in the New Testament and Strong’s
Exhaustive Concordance.
