Beethoven would complete this, his third piano sonata in 1795. It is the final of the three Op. 2 sonatas, all of which were dedicated to his friend and mentor Joseph Haydn. It is the second longest piano sonata Beethoven would compose, and is noted for its difficulty. The length and difficulty of the work provides hints as to the music Beethoven intended to compose for both piano and eventually orchestra.

This sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro con brio
II. Adagio
III. Scherzo: Allegro
IV. Allegro assai
