A Shepherd Without a Flock Flock Without a Shepherd

A verse in the Prophecy of Isaiah reads: All we like sheep have gone astray, every one hath turned aside into his own way. A number of priests have failed to shepherd well. It seems that modernist errors have infected many within the hierarchy. Because of this, a number of the sheep have grown distrustful…suspicious…or even disdainful towards priests in general due to the fact that they were misled…that they were robbed on the liturgy of the Church of Rome…that they or their children were even robbed of the true Catholic Faith. As a result of this suspicion, an independent spirit grows within the traditional Catholic as a virtual wall is erected between shepherd and sheep. The pastor, at times, can be seen solely as a spiritual vending machine that provides Sacramental graces especially in the Confessional and at the altar. But when the pastor embraces his role not just as a Sacramental minister, but also as one that rules and governs the flock…a father who has a right to be respected and, yes, obeyed…many sheep find themselves hesitant to follow the lead of the shepherd. Having been burned before, suspicions linger and an independent spirit remains. In today’s Secret Prayer after the offertory, Holy Church prays that the mystery of the Holy Mass may provide for us a heavenly remedy…a cure…that will purge and cleanse our hearts of vice. The membership of the Church today is in need of serious healing. The unity of the flock has been wounded and even the most resilient are in need of spiritual medicine.
