Dave Clemo- The Call of Home

This is a track from a project I began a few years ago when I recorded a bunch of songs inspired by my Cornish Roots. For the record, I was born in Redruth Hospital in 1949 and spent my first thirteen years in a town called Hayle, just across the bay from St Ives and two stops from Penzance by train. My father was a railwayman and his job took him to London when I was ten and it was to be three years before we could join him. We lived in West London, just off Ladbroke Grove and a few hundred yards from Portobello Road. In 1966/7 the area became the cultural, musical and fashion epicentre of the hippie ‘underground’ counterculture and I was a part of that.
Apart from spending a few days in Marazion with my relatives in 1965 I never returned to holiday there until 1978. From 2000 onwards my wife and I spent our summer holidays in Cornwall. We took a tent and camped in many locations but from 2010 my health issues meant that we had to pack the tent away. From then on we stayed in chalets overlooking the sea on Hayle Towans, a few yards from where I spent my pre-school years. I wrote this song to express my love for my homeland and recorded it in my home studio a few years ago. I put the video together using photos and clips that I filmed over the last fifteen or so years. In the last series of photographs there is a picture of me aged about two with me standing in the same place sixty two years later!
