"Riptide" follows the adventures of Cody Allen and Nick Ryder — two former U.S. ARMY buddies turned beach bums who solve crimes in California through their Pier 56 Detective Agency (later known as the Riptide Detective Agency). The show features cool cars, boats and an aging Sikorsky S-58T helicopter dubbed “The Screaming Mimi”. It is firmly set in the “laid-back Vietnam vets solve crimes in warm climes” tableau of "Magnum P.I.". but instead of one Magnum there are two and instead of a curmudgeonly estate manager and his Dobermans there is a bungling scientist and his robot.
Man, the 80s were great.
"Riptide" featured television stalwarts Perry King as Cody Allen and Joe Penny as Nick Ryder. They were joined by Thom Bray as the brilliant but nerdy scientist Murray “Boz” Bozinsky and his robot sidekick Roboz.
The show was created by Stephen J. Cannell and Frank Lupo under the banner of Stephen J. Cannell Productions. It ran for 3x seasons for a total of 58 episodes.
The show’s theme song was composed by the great Mike Post, and perfectly embodies the light-hearted mix of action and hijinks the show offered to its views.
