Ein newes Lautenbüchlein (A new Lute book), No. 1 by Hans Neusidler

The book Ein newes Lautenbüchlein mit vil schonen Liedern (A new Lute book with many beautiful songs) was published in 1540. The composer of this book was a man called Hans Neusidler, who in 1540 was a citizen of Bavaria, but who was originally born in Pressburg (today known as Bratislava). Neusidler completed a prodigious collection of music for Lute in several styles before his death in 1563.

There are no confirmed paintings or sketches of the composer. The cover picture for this video is a painting called “Six Tuscan Poets” painted by the Florentine artist Giorgio Vasari in 1544, about the same time that Neusidler was performing and composing his Lute music. The image in the video itself is a sketch of a late renaissance lute player.
