Galicia's Fiery Tradition: The Night of the Pumpkins and Queimada Ritual

In Spain, Halloween is observed on the days of Day of the Witches, All Saints' Day, and Day of the Dead.
Similar Celtic traditions to those of other Western countries are found in many places of Spain.
On Halloween, locals go trick-or-treating and carve pumpkins.
But the people of Galicia, in northwest Spain, use pumpkins a little bit differently.
October 31 is referred to as "the Night of the Pumpkins."
Galicians pour a beverage known as queimada into hollowed-out pumpkins.
Orange peel, cinnamon, coffee beans, and whiskey are used to make the alcoholic punch.
Next, the resulting mixture is ignited. The brewer creates streams of fire by ladling the combustible beverage into the air.
As the mixture is brewing, a spell is said.
In local taverns, framed copies of this incantation are occasionally on display.
