Tchaikovsky completed this symphony in 1875, with the premiere performance being given in November the same year in Moscow. The name “Polish” symphony was given to the work by British conductor Sir August Manns after the English premiere of the work.

Manns believed that the final movement which contained a polonaise dance was meant to symbolise the liberation of Poland from Tzarist Russian occupation. It is likely that Tchaikovsky meant for the opposite, as the polonaise was considered a symbol of the Romanov dynasty.

The work is comprised of five movements:
I. Introduzione e Allegro
II. Alla tedesca
III. Andante elegiac
IV. Scherzo
V. Finale
