In 1788 Antonio Salieri completed his opera «Cublai, gran kan de’ Tartari», 🎶 a satire on Peter the Great and his court’s intrigues. The libretto, written by Giovanni Battista Casti, was based on his «Poema Tartaro», 🎼 both a satire mocking Catherine the Great, and a parody of Russian history masqueraded as history of the Mongols, whose publication had been previously forbidden. The staging of Salieri’s opera was also not allowed by the Austrian authorities. The author attempts to identify the historical prototypes and events of Peter the Great’s times underlying the opera.
