A testimony-only Michigan House hearing Thursday on a proposal to limit employers’ ability to require workers to get vaccinated leaned heavily on remarks from vaccine-resistant doctors with little input from prominent health associations and business groups who oppose the measure.

Under House Bill 4471, sponsored by Rep. Sue Allor, R-Wolverine, Michigan businesses would be barred from requiring their employees to get vaccines for COVID-19 and other diseases as a condition of employment. They also could not require employees to wear masks in the workplace or publicly disclose their vaccination status.

The legislation, considered by the House Workforce, Trades and Talent Committee on Thursday, is similar to a recent House-passed proposal also sponsored by Allor to ban publicly-funded entities from requiring vaccines. To date, there have been no efforts at the state level in Michigan to implement government-backed COVID-19 vaccine mandates.
