One year ago, you sent us to Moldova to go very deep into the country's politics and report on the snap elections due to be held on July 11, 2021.
The snap elections were won by the Action and Solidarity Party - an allegedly pro-Western party tethered at the time to the popularity of the newly elected president.
A year later, the winner is polling at less than half of what it got in July 2021; the country is significantly poorer than it was just a year ago and most of their top points on their agenda are far from being delivered and likely will not be delivered at all.
To make things worse, if elections were to be held next Sunday, the pro-Russian communists would win outright and, together with the pro-Russian oligarchic party, they could amend the Constitution any way they see fit.
Some of that is natural (all democratically-elected regimes erode while in power) but quite a lot of it is a string of unforced errors by the victors. When your big victories on policy are a tax on lottery tickets, gender neutral pronouns on public positions and pissing off the second largest city through a botched counter-campaign... that's your fault - not the fault of Russia or anyone else, really.
At the same time, the current Regime has managed to get Moldova on the list of candidate states for the European Union - which, to many of those who voted for them, is a big win. But even that happened at least in part as a result of circumstance. Without the escalation of hostilities in Ukraine, the Action and Solidarity power would not have been able to deliver.
