Bizet completed this overture for orchestra in winter of 1873 on behalf of a commission from conductor Jules Étienne Pasdeloup. The work was premiered in February of 1874. The work is meant to reflect French patriotism during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Moderato
II. Andantino
III. Moderato
