“Sidewalk Fossil”

I visit the sidewalk fossil every day
And it talks to me
It tells me how once there was something between the spaces of its bones
How Raul had been somewhere near it in 1998
And how it has no need for an archaeologist
Paul Garcia, who works for SideScrub, a local business that cleans city bus stops, uses a high-powered spray water hose to clean the dirt out of it every night
But it never tells me what tree it came from
I look around but I cannot find any of the leaves on the other trees to match it
Maybe it blew off a tree someone bought at a nursery as they drove it home
It’s not hand-drawn
No one can draw nature that perfectly
Perhaps it visited here because of the warm weather and decided to stay
To “put down roots,” so to say, or better yet, to “leave an impression” as proof that it was here
